3-History

Neyshabur was built in Sassanid era, in the middle years of the 3rd century AD, by order of Shapur I. Throughout history, this city has been one of the leading centers of Islamic sciences and hometown of many scholars, poets, Sufis and other influential figures, and has typified the Iranian history and culture.

It was capital of Taherian dynasty. Although not the capital during the reign of other rulers (except at the beginning of Seljukian period), Neyshabur has always been an important city, especially in terms of science, art and commerce, and, as indicated in credible historical documents, the Samanid period was the golden age of artistic and cultural development in this city.

Neyshabur was the academic capital of the Islamic world during the 4th and 5th centuries Hijri (10th and 11th centuries AD). In the era of scientific bloom, "science" typically included non-philosophical branches of knowledge, Hadith, Islamic jurisprudence and exegesis, basic sciences such as mathematics and astronomy, philosophy, logic, and theology.

The famous sage Omar Khayyam, for instance, was unsurpassed at his time in mathematics, geometry and astronomy. The book Al-Hakem Neyshaburi deals with the lives of 2680 prominent scholars of Neyshabur universities in the 4th century (from 301 to 400 Hijri, 913 to 1010 AD).

Ebn-e Abi al-Sadeq Abolqasem Abdul Rahman Ebn-e Ali Ebn-e Abi-al-Sadeq Al-Neyshaburi, also known by his epithet "the second Hippocrates", was educator of Sayyed Esma'il Jorjani and wrote the book "Exposition on Chapters" , one of the best books explaining Hippocrates' Chapters.

Ebn-e Abi Sadegh, physician and philosopher, who was born in Neyshabur in 385 Hijri (995 AD) and died in 470 Hijri (1077 AD), was the brightest pupil of Bu Ali Sina (Avicenna) and writer of expositions on works of Hippocrates and Galen.

Some historians believe that Neyshabur was the birthplace of the physician Borzuyeh. Mohammad Reza Shafiei Kadkani and Hossein Vahid-e Khorasani are among the most prominent contemporary figures born in Neyshabur.

In 808 Hijri, an earthquake left the original Neishaboor in ruins and the new city was then built nearby.
