Breastfeeding Reduces Risk of Postpartum Depression
“The risk of postpartum depression in women who breastfeed their children is significantly reduced”, the Director of Mental Health Department of NUMS announced.
“Researchers have found that, in general, breastfeeding is related to improving the mental health of mothers and infants, therefore, promoting breastfeeding is considered as a basic strategy for the sustainable development of all countries throughout the world”, Mohammad Azini said.
“The effects of breastfeeding on the mother's mental health include: reducing cortisol and anxiety levels, improving sleep quality, and reducing the risk of depression”, He continued.
“The effects of breastfeeding on the infant’s mental health include: creating peace and a sense of security necessary for the growth and development of the baby, having a happier and gentler mood, better coping with mental pressures and less likely to have behavioral problems in the future”, He added.
“Researches show that children who are not breastfed have 30% more behavioral problems”, he concluded.
